Writing a Screenplay? What Should You Keep in Mind?

1. What makes a good story? Conflict, and something to root for, a new perspective.

2. Your main character(s) must have flaws, perfect is boring. And, these flaws should play nicely against your antagonist or the conflict in tShow he story.

3. Write what you know, create your own world or research.

4. What makes a great character name? The name Nick Fury is a great example of the name representing qualities of the character.

5. Show, don't tell.

6. Alfred Hitchcock, The Master of Suspense said that if you let the audience in on some of the storyline but leave the characters in the dark that the audience starts to feel stress for the characters. The longer you can keep the characters going without resolution the better.

7. Your story can't be too predictable and your characters can't be incredibly lucky.

8. We have to hook our audience in the first few minutes.

9. I, personally, love stories with a twist. I also love stories with symmetry.

10. Create a space where you can think, outline and write.

11. You will always be editing. It is better to get started than to be perfect.

12. If you find yourself blocked try changing locations, taking a shower, getting some exercise, calling a friend, or getting out there and experience life. Something may come to you OR check out the free resources for some more tips.

13. Have fun and enjoy the process. Whatever that process may be.

14. The legendary Dr. Maya Angelou told me, "Keep writing." So, let's go!

(Mostly) Free Video Editing

Programs & Resources

Filmora - A free editing software with a lot of great presets. This program is perfect for new editors but even a savvy editor can have fun and elevated projects with this software. There is a text, animation and sound package included and an option to upgrade.

iMovie - A free editing software available on iphones and Mac computers. Great for beginners and for making simple quick edits. There is a text, animation and sound package included.

CapCut - A free editing app available on phones, PC and Mac computers. Great for editing on the run. If you like fan edits this program is loaded with great animated text and powerful preset transitions making beginners look like pros.

Final Cut Pro - Is NOT a free editing software but has nearly all of the capabilities as pro editing software. The interface is very user friendly and as easy to use as a basic editing program.

Premiere Pro - Is NOT a free editing program. This is a professional level program. Premiere is a part of the Adobe Suite and works via "Dynamic Link" with other programs like After Effects. The user interface is complicated and you will need a teacher and tutorials to navigate the program.

DaVinci Resolve - Is a free editing program. This is a professional level program. The cool part is the option to make the interface look like Final Cut or Premiere. There is a learning curve to the program but it is free. Also known for its color grading capabilities.
